Biology provides a wide breadth of knowledge which touches on many varied aspects of a range of topics. These range from the internal
workings of organisms in physiology and the interdependence of living things in ecology, to social issues including man's influence on the
environment and the ethical considerations of genetics.
The study of biology therefore encourages an appreciation of these issues and the implications as well as providing an insight into the
living world.
The WJEC specification is intended to define a body of knowledge and skills which is considered essential to the study of biology at this level. It provides a broad view of all the major aspects o the subject and an appreciation of their interdependence.
The breadth of study and updated content will enable the implications of modern biology to be appreciated and the importance of the role of these studies in understanding environmental, ethical and social issues and their implications.
An understanding of scientific method as the means by which the body of scientific knowledge is increased and an enquiring and critical approach is fostered, including an awareness that different perceptions, predictions and interpretations may be applied according to context.
The practical work serves to illustrate and to promote an investigatory approach. Computer technology such as CD-Roms, the Internet and computer simulations are used.
It is intended that the use of a variety of approaches will stimulate interest, promote understanding and engender an overall appreciation and sense of wonder at the living world.
The course includes a great deal of practical work and pupils should be prepared to handle living organisms and biological materials.
However, dissection of a whole or part of a mammal is not compulsory.
The course includes a series of visits, workshops, lectures and fieldwork which pupils are expected to attend as they are an essential part of the course.
In order to complete this course successfully, students will need to study privately using a wide range of resources and be prepared to occasionally work outside the normal timetable in order to complete experiments and investigations.
Human Biology OCR AS (3886)/A (7886)
The content of the AS course is brought to life with the use of 'real world' contexts, including the biochemical and caring professions, health, alternative medicine, conservation, social issues, research ethics, sports studies and leisure studies which give the subject relevance and interest.
The course will complement and support studies in many other subjects including health and social care, social studies, psychology, sport, science and dance.
The A2 course includes discussing improving athletic performance, gene therapy, genetic screening, genetic engineering and evolution of man.
