Welsh Baccalaureate launched at Bryn Hafren ..
School Trip to the United States !
A group of 44 pupils and four staff from Bryn Hafren recently spent 10 days on a spectacular school trip visiting Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Whilst there they visited Farmer's Market where they met Nicholas Cage, spent an exciting day in Universal Studios, took a boat trip and toured Alcatraz, rode the famous cable cars around the streets of San Francisco, scenes of many famous films and walked across the Golden Gate Bridge .
The weather was wonderful and everyone had an amazing time.
Staff of the Barry Sixth form
( Bryn Hafren site) were thrilled to welcome back a record number of students to the Sixth Form.
This year, for the first time, all Year 12 students will be embarking on the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced diploma.
This initiative was launched on our Welsh Baccalaureate day.
Our 6th Form Students listened attentively to a presentation on this new qualification and then participated enthusiastically in group activities designed to raise awareness of the Welsh Baccalaureate.
Students responded very positively to the day and rose to the challenges presented to them.
The Welsh Baccalaureate is timetabled in lessons that the 6th form have to attend under government legislation (PSE / Keys Skills etc.)
Therefore the Welsh Baccalaureate takes up no extra lesson time and our students have the opportunity to obtain a qualification which is equivalent to an A grade at A level

This year's open evening
was a great success.
Everyone had a tour of the school and it's facilities.
Many parents commented on the excellent state of the building and it's facilities and on how helpful all the staff and school students were.
Our headteacher talked to a hall packed full of families.
Drama Success !
Bryn Hafren is delighted and proud to announce that Megan Schlogl and Sadie Townsend were amongst the top ten
students according to edexcel, the UK's largest awarding body.
They both sat their GCSE Drama exams earlier this summer and the results issued last month, show that out of 60878 candidates, they achieved two of the highest overall marks.
Social Sciences Trip to Cardiff
Jerry Jarvis, Edexcel's Managing Director said "This is a tremendous achievement and testament to the hard work these students put into preparing for their exams. We send our congratulations to Megan and Sadie
Our 6th formers attended Cardiff University by special invitation from the School of Social Sciences in October!
They were praised for their maturity and intelligent questioning of lecturers.
Dr Jones of the university said that they will be welcomed if they make an application to join the course in the future.
Dr Jones has already offered to come in to school and
lead some sessions because he was impressed by the way our students behaved.
Phil Whitcombe, Headteacher reported that the school was extremely proud of the achievements of the girls and it reflected the immense amount of hard work that they, together with their Drama Teacher, Miss Alex Williams, had undertaken to achieve such superb results.
A group of very lucky year 9 pupils of Bryn Hafren Comprehensive were treated to an insight into the running of Cardiff Wales' Airport. Throughout the year all year 9 pupils worked on a project in their Spanish and French lessons which aimed at improving the airport's website. Pupils worked in groups to prepare a presentation giving the good and bad things about the website and finally their opinion on how it should be improved. Steve Hodgetts, from the airport, had the very hard task of picking the winning groups.
Mrs Janis Griffiths, Head of Social Science at Bryn Hafren, said that she was 'delighted that the trip went so well and that we were made so welcome by staff and students of the School of Social Sciences. We look forward to an ongoing and profitable partnership'.
The lucky winners had a tour of the airport and were able to talk to staff about their jobs but for many the highlight was being treated to a very delicious lunch in the board room. The project will soon run into the second stage where the pupils will be going to the airport for the second time to evaluate the use of languages at the airport especially of the signs and notices around the airport.
